PROPER CARE

Inspecting Your Radiator

*EASY*

Visually inspect the exterior of your radiator each month as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). If the engine has been run recently, let it cool. Raise the hood.
  2. Examine the radiator for corrosion or leaks. If corrosion or leaks are identified, they should be repaired by a professional automotive technician.
  3. Check the front side of the radiator (and air conditioning condenser) for debris. Clean the outside of the radiator if it is clogged with bugs, leaves, etc. It is important that air be able to flow through the radiator for cooling action to occur. Air must also flow through the air conditioning condenser, which acts like a mini-radiator to cool the refrigerant. Remove the debris with a metal brush from the outside or low pressure water hose from the inside.
  4. If the small, metal cooling fins of the radiator are bent or flattened, straighten them out with wire brush. Close the hood.
